Round 1 of the 2026 British Superbike Championship proved a fruitful affair for McAMS Yamaha, with the officially backed outfit claiming a handful of podium finishes across both the British Superbike and Quattro Group British Supersport Championship, courtesy of Brad Ray and Ben Currie.
The weekend got off to a strong start on the Yamaha R1, with Ray topping combined practice on Saturday with a 1:33.181 and securing a place in Qualifying 2 in the evening’s critical Pre-Qualifying session, where he improved on his fastest time of the weekend yet again with a 1:33.008.
The 28-year-old went on to qualify from the front row for Race 1, where he set the tone for the weekend to come – battling at the sharp end, matching the pace of the front-runners, and bringing the R1 home in third place at the chequered flag.
Ray and the team returned for Bank Holiday Monday’s 12-lap sprint with astonishing pace, surging to the front of the pack and setting the standard throughout the opening stages. With the intensity upped for the shorter format, Ray delivered a standout performance aboard the R1, clocking the fastest lap of the race, a 1:32.910 to earn pole position for the third and final race of the weekend.
Starting from the front of the grid for the 18-lap finale, Ray made another strong getaway and led early. As the race wore on, and despite his best efforts to hold the advantage, the McAMS Yamaha rider slipped back to third, crossing the line having applied sustained pressure on Haslam with consistent lap times within the 1:33s.
Heading to Donington Park in just under two weeks, Ray sits third in the overall BSB Championship standings, a strong and consistent start to his 2026 campaign. He and the team left Oulton Park in high spirits.
The all-new Yamaha R9 enjoyed a positive debut race weekend in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship, with both Ben Currie and Harry Truelove representing McAMS Yamaha at Oulton Park.
Demonstrating strong pace throughout the weekend, Currie qualified in second for Race 1 and quickly asserted himself at the front of the field. Battling amongst the leading pack, the Australian brought the triple-cylinder R9 home in third – introducing the machine to the championship in style.
That same result followed in Bank Holiday Monday’s finale, with Currie once again starting from the front row and leading in the early stages. Slipping back to third by the chequered flag, the championship contender secured a second podium of the weekend for McAMS Yamaha, rounding off a highly productive opening round with the officially supported squad.
For Truelove, the weekend began with an unfortunate setback, with the #44 rider hitting the ground on Lap 2 of the opening 12-lap sprint. He returned in determined fashion for Monday’s race, however, fighting through from 18th on the grid to take the flag in eighth. It was a ride that showcased his potential aboard the R9 and defined his weekend with resilience and grit.
The team now turn their attention to Round 2 of the British Superbike and Quattro Group British Supersport Championship, taking place at Donington Park on 15–17 May.
