McAMS Yamaha Shine at Thruxton: Podiums, Pole Positions and a Wildcard Win for Can Öncü

Round 7: Thruxton

McAMS Yamaha left Thruxton with plenty to celebrate after round seven of the 2026 British Superbike and Supersport Championships, headlined by a sensational wildcard victory for World Supersport star Can Öncü and a brace of British Superbike podiums for Brad Ray, with Harry Truelove also putting in a solid shift across the weekend.

The team’s Superbike effort got underway with Ray ending Pre-Qualifying in ninth. It wasn’t the result he was chasing after a promising day of pace and progress, with a competitive lap time proving elusive in the closing session – but it was enough to book his place in Saturday’s Qualifying 2.

In British Supersport, Harry Truelove flew the McAMS Yamaha flag, closing out Friday fifth overall with a 1:17.546. Alongside him, World Supersport wildcard entry Can Öncü made steady gains across his first two sessions aboard the R9, ending the day thirteenth overall on his introduction to the circuit.

Saturday’s Qualifying 2 saw Ray secure fifth on the Superbike grid for Race 1, while over in British Supersport Qualifying, Öncü and the McAMS Yamaha crew found a big step forward with the R9, banking a best lap of 1:16.932 to line up fifth for the Sprint Race – an eye-catching result on his very first weekend at Thruxton. Truelove qualified further back in seventh.

BSB Race 1 brought mixed fortunes. Ray ran a patient race, managing his tyres while sitting fifth and shadowing the leading group, before a red flag brought proceedings to an early and unwelcome halt just as the #28 rider was preparing to strike.

Supersport delivered the day’s standout moment. Öncü was on the attack from the very first lap, slicing through to second at Turn 1 before seizing control of the race outright and building a lead of over half a second.

As the pack regrouped for a final charge to the flag, a fierce three-way scrap broke out between the #61 rider, Luke Stapleford and Oli Bayliss. A last-gasp lunge at the final chicane ran both Bayliss and Öncü wide, allowing Stapleford through for the win – but Öncü crossed the line second to claim his first podium at the circuit.

Sunday began with Ray on pole for the Sprint Race, running at the front of the field until an ambitious move from Haslam at Club chicane on Lap 9 sent him tumbling back to eighth.

All the more determined, Ray hit back immediately, firing in the fastest lap of the race – a 1:14.783, to claim pole for the afternoon’s Feature Race. He wasn’t finished – a bold move around the outside at Club chicane on the final lap saw him pass Ryde to snatch the last podium spot in dramatic fashion.

Öncü backed up his Saturday heroics in the Supersport Feature Race, carving forward from ninth on the grid and repeatedly attacking at Turn 3 before finally muscling into the lead on Lap 7. He then had to survive a two-lap sprint to the flag after a Lap 16 safety car bunched the pack, but the #61 rider held his nerve to bring home a maiden win for the team at Thruxton. Truelove rounded out a solid weekend with sixth in the same race.

The BSB Feature Race brought the curtain down on the weekend, with Ray starting from pole once more. He worked his way into contention as the race developed, moving up to second and fuelling the team’s hopes for a sensational race victory. Holding strong and appearing comfortable on heavily used tyres, he entered the lead on the final lap of the race.

Determined to hold position until the end, his gap at the front simply wasn’t enough to keep Vickers at bay, with the #7 rider finding his way through at the Club chicane to take victory. Ray crossed the line second to secure his second podium of the day, and round off a positive weekend for the McAMS-backed crew.

It was a weekend to remember for the supported outfit – a maiden victory and a podium for wildcard Öncü on his Thruxton debut, a pair of hard-fought Superbike podiums for Ray, and continued solid form from Truelove. Ray heads to Cadwell Park still third in the championship standings, with the team eager to build on the momentum in two weeks’ time.

“It’s been a really good weekend for me and the team at McAMS Yamaha – it was a shame to not have got a podium in yesterday’s race as I feel like we had more to give – but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. Today’s results were well deserved, we had the potential to win in both races. Even so, it felt great to reward the team with two podiums after all their hard work this weekend. I’m feeling good on the bike heading into Cadwell Park, where we’ll aim to be competitive again.”

“I’m feeling very good after my weekend at Thruxton with McAMS Yamaha. We made an incredible step from Friday to Saturday and improved the package a lot throughout the last few days. I found a strong feeling on the bike and made a great relationship with the team as well. I want to thank them for the opportunity – to walk away from the weekend with a win and a podium is great, especially considering this is my first time at the track!”

“I’m feeling pretty good after my weekend in Thruxton. It’s never been my strongest circuit, but I feel like we were able to make some valuable steps forward with the Yamaha R9, and were able to fight towards the front all weekend long. I couldn’t quite match the pace at the end of the race to put the team in podium contention, but we weren’t far away, so we’ll take that as a positive. The team worked exceptionally well all weekend, so I’d like to say a massive thank you to them, and of course a congratulations to Can for his victory today. We’ll head to my home round at Cadwell Park with a strong feeling and aim to build from here.”

“To say I’m proud of the team’s efforts this weekend would be a huge understatement. Thruxton has always been a strong track for the Yamaha, so we entered the weekend with high expectations. Brad rode exceptionally, as always, and gave it 110% until the chequered flag in all three races. To have secured two podium finishes with the racing as close as it was, is an outstanding achievement. Unfortunately, the win didn’t come, but we can move on to Cadwell carrying an extra boost and an added dose of confidence. In British Supersport, Can did us all proud. To come to a new circuit, with a new team and bike and perform in the way he did was nothing short of exemplary. Hats off to him on Sunday’s win and Saturday’s podium – he and the team should be very proud. Harry also put on a good showing at Thruxton, making big steps forward at a track that he hasn’t always felt comfortable at. We move onto Cadwell Park with momentum and can’t wait to get back to work.
