McAMS Yamaha enjoyed a successful meeting at Scotland’s Knockhill circuit this weekend – headlined by a second race victory for Ben Currie and the Yamaha R9 in British Supersport (BSS), and a duo of hard-fought podium finishes for Brad Ray in the British Superbike Championship (BSB).
The weekend at Knockhill got off to a wet start on Friday – with heavy rain presenting the team with a valuable opportunity to collect data in challenging conditions. In BSB, Ray ended the day in fourth overall, with Currie finishing third and teammate Harry Truelove seventeenth in BSS.
The officially-supported team were presented with a nicer day of weather come Saturday, where Ray went on to show speed from the off – bagging a fourth-place start for the opening race of the weekend with a fastest lap of 47.486.
In BSS, Currie bagged an impressive pole position lap for the day’s later Sprint Race, setting a new lap record with a 49.03 on the R9, while Truelove earned a spot on the front of the third row.
Race 1 in the British Superbike Championship was an effort defined by determination and commitment for Ray, who rode exceptionally at the front, staying glued to the rear of race leader Kyle Ryde for much of the race. The team’s opening 30-lap stint ended with heartache for Ray and the team, with a mechanical issue resulting in a hard-to-swallow DNF.
In the British Supersport Sprint, Currie delivered a masterclass performance to lead the hunt for the win – fighting closely with rival Jack Kennedy before a mistake from the Irishman gifted the R9 rider a sizeable lead – maintained by Currie until the end to make it a second victory of the season. Further back, Lincolnshire’s Truelove ended the race in sixth.
Ray carried the momentum of a strong Saturday into Sunday’s 20-lap Sprint Race, lining up from the middle of the front row and making an excellent start to remain within the leading pack.
Holding firm in podium contention throughout, he worked his way past Scott Redding to take second place before a safety car period brought a brief interruption at the start of lap eight. Undeterred, Ray re-engaged with real intent on the restart, underlining his pace by setting the fastest lap of the race on lap nine. The #28 crossed the line a well-deserved runner-up, just half a second behind race winner Ryde – a result that reflected astonishing commitment and determination.
From Pole Position in Race 3, Ray rounded off the weekend in style with another composed and commanding performance in the feature race.
Restarted following an early red flag, the #28 pushed to the limit throughout, tracking race leader Redding closely all the way to the chequered flag to secure a podium finish – the 60th of his BSB career. It was a result that epitomised Ray’s relentless approach over the course of the weekend, and he heads to Snetterton in a fortnight sitting fourth in the championship standings, 47 points off the top.
It was another impressive showing in the Supersport class from Currie, who delivered a race-long battle at the sharp end to bring home a second-place finish for McAMS Yamaha.
Taking the front in the early stages, Currie was edged back to second but refused to relinquish the challenge, remaining firmly in contention for the win all the way to the flag. It was a performance full of grit and promise, and he leaves the weekend second in the Supersport standings, just seven points off the top spot, with plenty of momentum to carry into Snetterton.
Truelove capped off the weekend in Scotland with a seventh-place finish in the final 26-lap race – and heads towards Snetterton with plenty more to demonstrate sat seventh in the British Supersport standings.
